Area - Activities
The area of Meteora comprises a paradise for every climber. There are also old paths of outstanding beauty that offer the chance to go trekking through the enormous Rocks.
The visitor can experience a day's outing, starting from Kalampaka and getting to meet the wider area , a place filled with picturesque villages, lakes , rivers and mountains whose beauty equals that of the Alps.
At a distance of 18 kilometers from Kalampaka there is the 'Pyli' (Gate) canyon, a landmark which unites Epirus with Thessaly. In 1514 an arched stone bridge was built here. The visitor can continue his/her trip to Plastiras Lake (it is one hour and twenty minutes drive from Kalampaka) or to Pertouli and the Aspropotamos villages.
Just before the Pertouli village and through the so called 'Pertouli' s meadows' a ski centre operates at an altitude of 1200 m. The visitor can also find accommodation for horse-riding and archery as well as paths and mountainous routes for cycling and moto-cross. After Pertouli , in Aspropotamos area ( Aheloos) there is a centre specialized in canoe-kayak and rafting.
Just 3 kilometers from Kalampaka, in Theopetra village, a cave named after this very village is located. This cave has got considerable findings from the Paleolithic Period that has aroused the vast interest of the scientific community.
