Meteora

The imposing Rocks of Meteora and the monasteries clung on tight to them compose a breathtaking and transcendental landscape, a unique phenomenon that is protected by UNESCO as a monument of the worldwide cultural legacy and a token of exceptional natural beauty.

Approximately one thousand enormous Rocks that remind us of a stone forest evoke awe and ecstasy to the visitor. These must have been the very feelings of the first monks who were settling in here constructing a monastic centre which nowadays completes its six centuries of life. The first organized monastery -The Great Meteoro - operated in the 14th century, though the first hermits came in the area in the 11th century.

Only six out of the 24 monasteries are now in existence, two of which are actually nunneries. The visitor has the opportunity not only to admire the exquisite scenery, the architecture and the devotional art but also to observe the monks' way of life.

Precisely beneath the Rocks lies the beautiful town of Kalampaka and the picturesque village of Kastraki. Opposite the Rocks the Pindos mountain chain completes this exquisite picture.
